College Life in the Fall

Ah, college. They say those are some of the best years of one’s life. And they really were. But I’ll let you in on a little secret: I get to stay in college forever, and not do any homework. It’s pretty much the best gig ever. It’s called college ministry, peeps!

The fall is by far the busiest season of the year, aside from all the personal fun things one can do, like rake leaves, drink hot things, do stuff with pumpkins, enjoy the weather, etc. In the college ministry world, it equals meeting new students, kicking off events, trying new things to bring people together, setting up one-on-one meetings with students, planning leadership training… I could  go on. Each month we plan what we call a “Connect Event”, which is a time, usually on the weekend, that students can come do something fun and bring their friends. The two main Connect Events for September and October were the Fall Conference and Pumpkin Carving in the SAC.

Fall Conference. It’s been a good ten years that we’ve been attending this three day conference, and it’s exhaustergizing (adjective. the process of being exhausted and energized simultaneously). Stay up late, wake up early, camp (I actually gave up on camping about three years ago. Go ahead, call me a pansy), worship Jesus with 550 others, hear Biblical truth, deepen relationships with friends, eat… what else? It’s a sweet deal. Anyway, this year we took around eighteen students to the event. We had a blast building relationships and figuring out what it means to be adopted sons and daughters of our great God and Father.

Pumpkin Carving. Need I explain? We got pumpkins from Sunny Side, backed a truck up at the SAC at KWU on Friday night, threw some knives on tables and voila! Instant happiness! It was fun meeting some new people, catching up with old people (er.. old friends?) and carving a pumpkin or three!

Winding down in November, ha! That’s what we always say…
